Reed Family Racing made the trip to Veterans Motorplex at Highland Rim this weekend for Logan Conner's first appearance at the Tennessee facility. With TW Reed in Indiana, Logan carried the banner for the team as he tackled another new challenge in his Bandolero development.
The opening practice session served as an opportunity to learn the track and establish a baseline setup. While the lap times were modest, the session provided the team with valuable information heading into the remainder of the evening.
By the second practice session, Logan showed significant improvement. Building confidence with each lap, he lowered his lap times by more than a second and a half from his initial outing and began to settle into a rhythm around the fast quarter-mile oval.
With qualifying approaching, the team's objective was straightforward: repeat the pace shown during practice. However, as Logan took the green flag to begin his qualifying effort, he immediately exited the racing surface and came to a stop. After ensuring the car was safely out of harm's way, he radioed the team to report that the chain had come off the car.
The crew quickly went to work replacing the chain and making adjustments in preparation for the Round Robin session. Confident they had addressed the issue, the team also opted for a gear change in hopes of helping Logan improve upon his earlier lap times.
Once back on track, Logan continued to show progress and appeared comfortable behind the wheel. Unfortunately, as he exited Turn 4, the chain once again came off the car. This time, the chain wrapped around the rear axle and locked it in place, instantly sending the Bandolero into a complete 360-degree spin with all four tires smoking.
Despite the unexpected situation, Logan demonstrated tremendous car control by keeping the car off the outside wall. As he regained control and returned to pit road, fans gathered along the backstretch responded with applause after witnessing an impressive save.
Back in the pits, the team conducted an extensive inspection in an attempt to determine the cause of the repeated chain failures. Unable to identify the underlying issue and unwilling to risk significant damage to the car during the feature event, Reed Family Racing made the difficult decision to end their night early.
Although the results sheet won't reflect the progress made throughout the evening, the experience gained at Highland Rim proved invaluable. Logan adapted quickly to a new racetrack, improved substantially during practice, and displayed maturity and composure when faced with adversity.
The team will return to the shop this week to diagnose and correct the issue before returning to competition next Saturday night at Huntsville Speedway.
Sometimes the greatest successes aren't measured by finishing position. They are found in perseverance, preparation, and the lessons learned along the way. This weekend provided all three.
